It all began in the 1800’s back in Germany. Frank Steinbach, the son of a German butcher, learned how to cut and bone meat. Immigrating to the United States in the early 1900’s, he came to Chicago because he heard “that’s where the cows are”. Moving to Chicago, he started Steinbach Provision Co. in the heart of the Chicago Union Stockyards.
Since then the business has grown considerably. A company that started in a garage behind his house was transformed into a large cow boning operation by his sons John and Ed. Having a reputation for top quality cow meat, in Chicago, Steinbach Provision Co (SPC) flourished. John Steinbach’s sons Jack and Tom, both graduates of Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio, went to work in the cooler. Learning the meat business from the ground up. They decided to purchase the business when their father retired. In the year 2000, Jack Steinbach decided to retire, and his brother Tom bought 100% of the company. Since then, Tom has maintained the Steinbach name for meat packing in Chicago. Dedicated to providing quality meat products and exemplary customer service, Steinbach Provision Co. has maintained its solid reputation as a purveyor of top quality wholesale fresh meat cuts, grinding, and custom trimming operations.
